The ladies of Harry Potter movies have had quite a bit to say about their time starring in the films! The character of Hermione Granger is the biggest female character in the entire franchise and she is played by the lovely Emma Watson. Emma Watson didn’t have a lot of acting experience before she took on her role as Hermione Granger at the age of 10. The fact that she was young and inexperienced did not get in the way of her success or her ability to bring such amazing stories to life alongside the rest of the cast.
Some of the other women to star in the Harry Potter franchise include Bonnie Wright, Helena Bonham Carter, Natalia Tena, Katie Leung, and more. Continue reading to find out what all of these women have had to say about starring in Harry Potter, whether what they had to say was good or bad!
Harry Potter fans have had nothing but love for Emma Watson from the very start but she felt a bit differently! According to Cinemablend, Emma Watson said, "When I see the images of the first Harry Potter, I immediately think of how ugly my hair was." Her hair looked just fine.
In her interview with Marie Claire, Bonnie Wright said, "I guess for us and for the audience, it's not only a climax to the film, but it's also the climax of all 10 years of these movies. I think we're all hoping that everyone will be on the edge of their seats." The end of the franchise was very climactic!
Helena Bonham Carter is serious about her roles! In preparation for Harry Potter, she did some training. She said, "We went to wand school for about three weeks. We took it very very seriously. I actually got a wand blister on the [middle] finger. They kind of had different names for all the different moves, Latin ones."
It is normal for actors to keep a trinket or two from the movies they film. Emma Watson said, "I asked for permission to take Hermione’s time-turner from the third movie, and the cloak, and my wand. So those are my three things that I took with me." Those sound like nice props to keep!
In her interview with Marie Claire, Bonnie Wright said, "For me, the part started quite small and it grew as I got older, so it worked really well because I was still at school. Luckily for Dan [Radcliffe] and me, we lived in London so we'd go home to our house and see our friends on the weekend."
Natalia Tena revealed her favorite scene to film when she said, "I had so much fun filming the wedding scene. In this movie, Lupin and Tonks get married. This was our first scene we shot and it was at the beginning of the summer. It was absolutely ****ing beautiful. I would take out my accordion and start playing in between takes."
In her interview with Collider, Emma Watson said, "Rupert’s performance is so brilliant, he plays it perfectly. It’s all written over Rupert’s face that he really loves her and he regrets terribly leaving her. Part 2 is where you really see it develop though." We were convinced Rupert actually felt what Ron was feeling!
According to Indie London, Katie Leung said, "It’s kind of strange seeing pictures of yourself in papers kissing Harry Potter. You can’t really avoid it, though... Before I did the scene everyone kept coming up to me and asking if I was looking forward to it. It got me really, really nervous and I was having sleepless nights over it."
According to Collider, Evanna Lynch spoke of Luna saying, "She’s always going to be the same. Yeah, she doesn’t change, that’s the thing about her, she knows herself so well. Most of them, they go through all these stages, where they’re like battling with themselves, but she’s so happy with herself that I think the only thing that changes is her surroundings."
Emma Watson revealed, "I’ve sat in therapy and felt really guilty about it. I’m like why me, somebody else would have enjoyed and wanted this aspect of it more than I did. And I’ve struggled a lot with the guilt around that. I’m like, I should be enjoying this a lot more, I should be more excited and I’m actually really struggling."
Helena Bonham Carter admitted, "You just feel totally emasculated on set when you’re waving a bit a wood around and nothing’s coming from it. It’s very difficult to remember that you’ve actually got the intention to kill behind it. It’s not all fun and laughs; it’s actually quite hard work.”
According to The Guardian, Clémence Poésy said, "I was just in one film and then I came back for the last one. To me, it was simply one of the experiences I've had. That was it. It was fun, but it's not as if it is a big part of me." She played the role of Fleur Delacour in two of the films.
According to Time, Emma Watson said, "I don't have this intense fear or a desire to separate myself from the role. I'm really proud of the work I've done. I'm a geeky Harry Potter fan myself, so it would be stupid to try and fight it." There's no shame in being a geeky Harry Potter fan!
In an interview with Indiewire, Maggie Smith said, “I am deeply grateful for the work in ‘Potter’ and indeed ‘Downton’ but it wasn’t what you’d call satisfying. I didn’t really feel I was acting in those things." Her role as Professor Minerva Mcgonagall was a big deal to Harry Potter fans.
According to Telegraph, Bonnie Wright said, “I’m so respectful and understand those 10 years on Harry Potter were the foundation of my life. It was seminal to my growing up.” We watched her and the rest of the cast grow up right before our eyes for a decade of movies!
