Christina Applegate Was A Guest Star On 'Friends'

Friends is a hit television series that ran for ten seasons. The show was still going strong when the decision was made to end the show, but everyone felt it was the right time.

Numerous celebrities guest starred on the show during its lengthy run, including Jennifer Aniston's then-husband, Brad Pitt. Some said they enjoyed working on the series, while others have said they didn't have a good experience working the main cast members.

Christina Applegate appeared in two episodes in the show's ninth and tenth season as Aniston's (Rachel Green's) self-absorbed sister, Amy.

About her character Amy, the Vacation actress has said, "There are people who are really self-unaware, and they have absolutely no filter. Talking about playing Aniston's sister, Applegate also described the character as "really unaware, really in her own orbit."

The Married... with Children actress said about her character on Friends, "I believe that the funniest moment was when we (she and Aniston) start fighting. That was where the audience really lost it, and it was just ridiculous, and it was just so much fun to do."

How Did Applegate Really Feel About Working With The 'Friends' Cast?

Working on a hit show like Friends could be intimidating for some, and extras would be moved to another area of the scene if they tried to talk with certain cast members, like Jennifer Aniston.

Christina Applegate, had already had her own hit show, Married... with Children, when se made her appearance on Friends. She'd already been working in the industry for years, and had worked on several other projects previously.

Applegate also knew most of the cast before appearing on the show, and had worked with some of them before. One of the Friends cast members had even starred on one of her shows before!

According to Today, the Dead to Me actress spoke about working with the cast. "I've known Matthew Perry since we were kids. We did a movie called Dance Until Dawn together when we were little babies. But I've known him for 100 years."

One cast member, Matt LeBlanc, had even appeared Applegate's sitcom, Married... with Children, as a guest-star. "He had done a couple guest spots on Married... with Children many moons before that and then had a spinoff called Top of the Heap that he did from our show. So that was his first show."

Speaking about the other cast members, she said, "(David) Schwimmer's amazing and Lisa (Kudrow) and Courteney (Cox), I've known from like, 20-something years prior. It was just a great group, a lot of love there."

Applegate also said that she and her on-screen sister, Jennifer Aniston, "really bonded" while working together. "We hung out for a while after that and I really, really do love her," she said.

Apparently The Sweetest Thing actress had a lot of fun working with the main cast. When asked about "her favorite memory on set," Applegate responded that it was "just hanging out with the cast."

She continued, "That was really the best part of the week because they're just such a great group of people, really fun and funny. And it's easy and it wasn't a hard job. It felt like I got to just hang out with a bunch of people and socialize for a couple of days. And then in the middle of it, we shot a show."

Christina Applegate has also discussed why she feels Friends is such a popular show. "I remember talking to Marta (Kauffman) about Friends. And this was while we were working on (Applegate's NBC sitcom) Jesse. And she said the stars just aligned."

She added, "You had these six people who were just the most perfect actors for these parts, relatable, and they're so funny. And it doesn't often happen where everything works. Plus, it's just a great show. It's got heart, it's funny."

While some guest-appearances were considered unpopular even by the director, fans seemed to love Applegate's hilarious portrayal of Amy. The actress even won an Emmy Award in 2003, for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, for her work on Friends.

Applegate was blown away by the nomination and win. She said, "It was shocking that I was nominated for the episodes I did because it honestly didn't feel like work. And it didn't feel like I was doing anything special in any way."

She compared her win to a memorable scene from the film Sixteen Candles. "I was just having so much fun I really was in shock when that happened. It was one of those moments of, like, 'why... what,?' Like in Sixteen Candles when she's like 'Me?' And he's like, 'Yeah, you.' That's how I felt when they said my name."
